Do you ever think about moving somewhere else, but not sure how to decide where to move to? Have you lived in the same city for the past 20 years and you’re ready for a change? Whether you’re moving on your own or with family, this guide will help you :).

The main idea behind finding a place to live, is to determine what your values are. You need to somewhat know what is important to you, and what kind of lifestyle you want to have.

Sure, you can look at pictures of really beautiful countries and say “ooh, so nice! I want to live there!” but is it realistic?

Will that country provide you with everything you need in order to be fulfilled?

HOW TO CHOOSE WHERE TO MOVE

Let’s jump in!

  • What should be nearby

The surrounding area is important. If you have children or a dog, you may want to have a park nearby. Maybe you want to make sure there is good childcare or a school for your children. Do you typically workout with a group of people? Maybe you’d like to have a gym or yoga studio nearby so you can do your weekly sessions. Are you cool with buying everything you need at a grocery store, or do you prefer a market? Do you actually want all these to be nearby, or do you want to be outside of the city?

  • What your home should be like

You’ll want to find a home that is functional and affordable for you. How much space do you need or want? Two bedrooms and one bathroom? An apartment, a house, semi detached house? Maybe something completely non-traditional like a cave? Maybe a place with a yard for children to play. What about the view from your windows? Nature, city, ocean, or lake view?

  • What the locals should be like

You’ll of course be surrounded by the locals, so you need to decide if it matters what their values and beliefs are. Should they be diverse in terms of religion, race, and general mentality? Are you maybe most comfortable with one culture that you grew up with? Or maybe it doesn’t matter at all to you.

  • What kind of foods are available

In North America, you can pretty well buy any fruit, vegetable, meat, or dairy that you can think of. But is it important to you to eat fruits and veggies that are in season or grown locally? Do you care if your food is covered in pesticides and other chemicals? Or do you need it to be truly organic? Maybe you want to have your own garden. Does your body need tropical fruits like papaya and mango? Maybe you want to live only where avocados grow all year (That might secretly be my dream, but anyway…)

  • What kinds of jobs are available

This one might be at the top of your list if you’re like most people in the world, employed by a company. But, if you can work anywhere as long as you have a WiFi signal, then this might be at the very bottom of your list! Or maybe you won the lottery and you don’t need to work! Or you’re retired and very comfortable with that.

Your income needs to be able to support you and your dependants. It also needs to align with the living expenses of that area. How much do you need per month to cover your bills and other essentials? How much money do you want to be able to set aside for vacations? What is the structure of the jobs? Are they secure, or don’t have guaranteed paychecks?

Now maybe you’re thinking “Woah, that was a little overwhelming to think about.” Hmm, if only you could take this information and put it in a neat little organized document to make it less overwhelming. Don’t worry – I thought you might want that :). A nice, neat document will make it easier to choose where you want to move.
